Sustainable Atlantic Communities – SAtComm

The SAtComm project aims to equip Energy Communities (ECs) with the digitalisation and legal tools to empower them to integrate renewable energy and smart grid concepts, which will improve their competitiveness and maximise their sustainability. This can play a significant role in addressing the increasing impact of climate change on SMEs and local communities.

    Overview

The main objective of the SAtComm project is to promote energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by empowering citizens to play a central role in the clean energy transition and become “prosumers” – communities that both produce and consume energy. To achieve this the project team will utilise smart energy systems – including smart grids and information and communications technology systems and related storage – to develop and implement technologies that will enable citizens, including residential, SME and industrial entities, to mobilise as groups into Energy Communities and employ smart energy mechanisms such as peer to peer trading, demand side management, load shifting, and battery storage.

    Implementation

SAtComm will assess the regulations in the 4 Atlantic Areas which place the energy citizen at the centre of the Clean Energy Transition and develop and implement technologies that suit all jurisdictions and maximise their sustainability. Trials will be conducted in rural/coastal sites in all 4 jurisdictions with the technology emanating from the transnational design process, which can be used as a template for other ECs to replicate and aid the proliferation of these smart grid concepts.

    Key Objectives

    • Address increasing impact of climate change on SMEs and local communities.
    • Enable citizens, from residential, SME and industrial entities, to mobilise as groups into Energy Communities so they can be empowered to play a central role in the clean energy transition as “prosumers.”
    • Enable communities to integrate renewable energy and smart grid concepts to improve their competitiveness and maximise their sustainability.
    • Study legislation regarding Renewable Energy Communities and Citizen Energy Communities in all four Atlantic Areas to identify ways of applying a cohesive regulation system to all jurisdictions.
