The Sustainability Dingle project held a very successful stakeholder event in Benner’s Hotel, Dingle, Co. Kerry on Wednesday May 31st. The event was well attended both in person and online by a range of local groups and industry personnel from the energy and smart grid markets.

The Sustainability Dingle project works with a number of local collaborators in the Dingle area; Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub and the Corca Dhuibhne Community Energy group who together have the technical expertise and local knowledge to realise the project objectives.

Fionnán Ó hOgáin from Udaras na Gaeltachta opened the event welcoming all in attendance. Sean Lyons, project lead in Walton Institute, South East Technological University (SETU) then gave an overview of the Sustainability Dingle project and how energy communities, in areas such as Dingle, can play a significant role in the Clean Energy Transition. Energy communities can be a mechanism to empower local citizens and businesses to become prosumers and actively take control of their energy profiles and collectively integrate distributed energy to maximise their self-sustainability. Energy communities, where renewable energy technologies are implemented locally, can be sustainably balanced using mechanisms such as peer to peer trading, demand side management, load shifting and battery storage.

The modelling system the project team are developing was outlined to the stakeholders which described mechanisms to maximise the integration of renewable energy technologies to increase the sustainability of the region. Niall Grant, Walton Institute, SETU also described the data modelling techniques deployed and how these feed into the technical solution.
