What is a Digital Twin?
A digital twin is a computer-generated 3D model that replicates a real-world object or asset with remarkable precision. This virtual counterpart is meticulously designed to mirror its physical counterpart, providing an immersive and accurate representation. Within modern industrial practices, digital twins serve as powerful tools for monitoring various aspects of processes, components, or entire systems, or even the human-body in real-time.
The use of digital twins offers an advanced perspective that goes beyond simple observation. By harnessing real-time data and simulations, these digital replicas provide profound insight into the intricate workings of different business lines and processes. This heightened understanding allows stakeholders to analyse and comprehend the nuances of system dynamics, facilitating informed decision-making.
Sectors and Applications:
Manufacturing: replicate the entire production line, allowing for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance optimisation.
Healthcare: model individual patients to personalise treatment plans, simulate surgical procedures, and optimise healthcare workflows.
Energy and Utilities: monitoring and optimisation of energy production, distribution, and consumption, predictive maintenance of equipment, improving energy efficiency, and managing smart grids.
Ground Transportation and Aerospace: designing and testing vehicles and aircrafts, simulating flight conditions, and monitoring the health of critical components for predictive maintenance.
Construction and Infrastructure: planning and optimising building designs, monitoring construction progress, and managing infrastructure assets for maintenance.
Retail: optimise supply chain management, track inventory, and enhance the customer experience through personalised shopping recommendations.
Telecommunications: model and optimise network infrastructure, predict and prevent outages, and enhance the overall performance of communication networks.

Work with us! The Digital Twin Innovation Sprint
At Walton Institute, we believe Digital and Virtual Twin technology has the power to revolutionise industry. We want to help businesses leverage this tech and are currently seeking applications from businesses to work us with to explore the benefits of Digital and Virtual Twins – via an Innovation Sprint funded by Enterprise Ireland Innovation Vouchers.
The Digital Twin Innovation Sprint will take place in Q1 2024 over a three-week period. It’s a high-impact, low time commitment endeavour designed to generate outputs and value quickly for businesses. Week 1 involves an in-person 3-hour session with the Walton Institute Team onsite to understand and agree on business specific requirements and Sprint objectives; Week 2 is a one-hour online meeting to touch base and confirm work is on the correct trajectory; Week 3 is a final meeting (either online or in person depending on client preferences) to present the output of the Sprint process.
Throughout the Innovation Sprint, the dedicated Walton Institute Team of Digital / Virtual Twin experts will work on your objective for the duration. We do the heavy lifting.
The output of the Sprint process is a strategic report that informs, orientates and prioritises your Digital / Virtual Twin activities to generate maximum value for your business. Walton institute will also support the Enterprise Ireland application process for funding your Digital Twin Sprint and will be available to discuss any follow on work recommended in your strategic report.
