Contract R&D

The Technology Gateway engages in contract research to solve specific technical challenges for Irish companies. These projects are typically undertaken by companies that they can gain access to research knowledge in a quicker timeframe. 
The Walton Institute also engages in consulting to specific research, technical or knowledge challenges for Irish companies. Consulting engagements tend to be high-value engagements using Walton researchers to examine specific issues and make recommendations.

E-Textile Lab intelligent smart wearable garments for the detection and sensing of data can be knitted and woven into fabric.

Enterprise Ireland

The Innovation Voucher programme was developed to build links between Ireland’s public knowledge providers (such as Walton Institute) and small businesses. Innovation Vouchers worth €20,000 combined are available to assist a company or companies to explore a business opportunity or problem with a registered knowledge provider such as the Walton Institute.

The IP programme offers financial support to companies who engage in collaborative research projects with Walton Institute. Enterprise Ireland provides grants of up to 80% towards eligible costs of the research project. The proposal process and administration of the project is managed by Walton Institute. Walton uses the EI-IP programme to undertake joint research and development, which has a high degree of risk with EI HPSUs, large Irish companies and multinationals located in Ireland.

The aim of the Commercialisation Fund Programme is to improve the competitiveness of the Irish economy through the creation of technology-based start-up companies and the transfer of innovations developed in Higher Education Institutes and Research Performing Organisations to industry in Ireland. 
The programme will fund the development of innovations at all stages of the commercial pipeline to the point where they can be commercialised as new products, services and companies.

European Union Grants

The Technology Gateway can also advise on larger project grants, utilising European Union funds for SMEs and fast track to innovation funds for micro-SMEs. The team can help navigate the multitude of grants on offer and help find collaborators from across the EU.

The Technology Gateway in the Walton Institute offers companies access to  cutting edge living lab infrastructure. funded by Enterprise Ireland.

Mixed Reality Lab

Mixed Reality Lab has Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality equipment with Hololens, Oculus Quests and a VR Treadmill to test all types of virtual scenarios. 

Satellite

Satellite Radio Communications Testbed  hosts satellite comms, 5G with SDR nodes; a 0 - 6GHz frequency range Spectrum Analyser and a Vector Network Analyser; 0 - 6GHz frequency range, and a fully operational Satellite Ground Station.

Technology Licensing in WIT is managed through the Technology Transfer Office (TTO). It is the TTO that licenses the outputs of EI-IPs to the partner companies. In addition TSSG develops service frameworks and technologies independent of partner companies through the EI Commercialization Fund and the European Commission Framework programme and Walton Institute works hand-in-hand with the TTO to identify opportunities to license these frameworks to Irish industry or to Irish entrepreneurs to help create new start-ups.

SureSitter approached the TSSG Technology Gateway to evaluate their current platform, discover what the user’s needs were, how they were currently interacting with the SureSitter user interface (UI) and any pain points experienced. Using the output of this research TSSG created user flows to map out the new screens and UI. Following this a mid-fidelity wireframed UI was designed which helped to reduce the time to complete tasks and over all, eradicate the cognitive load of its users.

Amarna are looking to build a mobile application based on a BER assessment that will measure and model the BER performance of homes, focused first on targeting homeowners living in houses built pre-2006.

XR Concepts wish to review the current state of the art surrounding XR technologies and help with identification of relevant haptic technologies and possibly IoT sensors which may be incorporated into a golf club without adversely affecting the overall end user experience of using that club.

Mobile Ecosystem and Pervasive Sensing (MEPS)

Working with TSSG, Milltown Heritage is looking to assess  the capabilities of VR/AR technologies to  provide an enhanced interactive user experience to tourists to their planned purpose build Museum or interpretive centre and historic sites within a 3 km radius of the building.

Untapped AI looked to establish a user experience strategy exploring the users and their interactions with the Untapped AI application, this included a full user experience (UX) review of the existing application.

Waterford Technologies wanted to enhance their “File Archiver/Analyser” product to use cloud storage instead of archiving files on conventional storage servers.

Oracle VR Limited approached TSSG to explore the idea of a VR based prototype targeted for use with second level Transition Year students in Ireland
