The official website for IrelandQCI, a ground-breaking €10 million quantum technology project led by Walton Institute, is now live. The new website is a hub of information regarding the objectives of the Europe-wide ‘Quantum Communication Infrastructure’ initiative, where project progress can be found regularly updated.

The website can be found at www.IrelandQCI.ie and contains the latest project news, upcoming events and workshops, and introduces the many expert partners of the consortium. As milestones are met throughout the project duration, there will be real-time industry and academic ‘use case’ testimonials, outlining the benefits of the technology across Ireland.

IrelandQCI, the ‘Building a National Quantum Communication Infrastructure for Ireland’ project incorporates integrating innovative and secure quantum devices and systems into conventional communication infrastructures. This will be done by enhancing the ESB Telecoms‘ optical fibre network with an additional layer of security, all based on quantum physics, in particular quantum key distribution (QKD).

IrelandQCI is one of several projects across the European Union which sees the European Commission working with 27 Member States, as well as the European Space Agency – ESA, towards the deployment of a secure quantum communication infrastructure spanning the EU.

Jointly funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) and the EU, IrelandQCI will trial 16 quantum security technology scenarios with key stakeholders across Ireland’s public, industry and academic sectors over the next two years.

Waterford’s Walton Institute, at South East Technological University (SETU), is leading the IrelandQCI project on behalf of the SFI Research Centre CONNECT. Partners include specialists in quantum technologies at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Cork (UCC)’s Tyndall National Institute, with support from University College Dublin (UCD) and Maynooth University (MU). All are member institutions of CONNECT, the SFI Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications. Other participants in IrelandQCI include the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at University of Galway, as well as HEAnet and ESB Telecoms

The ultimate aim of Ireland QCI is to ensure our communications infrastructure is secure and future-proofed against the rising threat of cyber-attacks.
