Intelligent Transport Systems

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is weaving traditionally standalone vehicles into connected vehicular communication networks and enables the utilisation of generated information and advanced sensing, communication and computing technologies to increase transport safety and tackle the growing emission and congestion problems. New services and business models will be created by the evolution of transport digitalisation and ITS, to enrich our life and motivate the growth of the economy.

The ITS area focuses on the research and innovation in delivering the Cooperative-ITS, which is also known as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication and has been regarded as the cornerstone for next-generation ITS solutions. Within this area, our research on ITS concentrate on software-defined radio, service and resource management, application for traffic efficiency and safety, and cybersecurity, which have covered most of the protocol stack of V2X from the physical layer to the application layer. The research work in these domains and our solid background in ICT provide us with a comprehensive understanding of ITS and drive us to deliver innovative ITS solutions. Besides, the latest progress in edge computing and 5G has also been considered and applied to ensure our prospective position.

V2X is based on the sharing of data between vehicles, infrastructure and other road users. The trustworthiness of this data, and of the vehicles that provide it to others, is of critical importance. For example, in the case of cooperative driving, data that is either withheld, or deliberately false, could have fatal consequences. Consequently, it is necessary to model how trust relationships are set up, how they can change over time, and how to recognize which trust actors should no longer be trusted. Our research is leading to a distributed, relationship-based trust model which considers the context of each vehicle.

Another aspect of ITS is the use of ICT to collect and managed public transport trip request data and to use this data to predict demand (in terms of pickup and dropoff locations and pickup time) for such trips in the future. Integrated and responsive transport solutions will offer more passenger convenience, greater operational efficiencies for transport operators, and lower carbon emissions as fewer journeys are made in private cars, in support of the move towards smart cities. Our research has led to a robust probabilistic model of trip demand and a prototype implementation of this model. The sponsoring company has taken out an evaluation licence for this, as they consider whether and how to integrate it into their workflows.

In all, the ultimate purpose of our research in ITS is to deliver faster, more connected and reliable vehicular networks, which enable the realisation of smarter, safer and greener mobility.
