As global communication and information networks grow, the security of these networks is imperative.
For more than a decade, Walton Institute has been working in projects related to cybersecurity, including network and communications security, data and information privacy and trust management topics, in both ICT and policy related aspects. While this work has often been considered cross-cutting to other ICT domains within our larger scale research and innovation action projects, Walton has also worked on dedicated cybersecurity related projects throughout the last 15 years.
Another area of considerable expertise built up in Walton Institute is international co-operation (both bi-lateral and multi-lateral activities) directly in relation to cybersecurity, with a large number of projects involving international partners (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Brazil, South Africa, etc.) collaborating on many areas together to improve cross border expertise in relation to enhancing cybersecurity knowledge. Walton has leveraged their cybersecurity expertise across several vertical sectors, including network management (including 5G), media, transport, and health sectors, amongst others.
Walton played an active role in the EU’s Network and Information Security Public Private Platform (NIS Platform), which was set up to support the EU Cyber Security Directive as a platform for influencing future Research & Innovation (R&I) in Network and Information Security issues. The Institute has been a founding member, steering committee member and co-author of a chapter entitled Resilient Digital Civilisation (collective layer) in the Working Group 3 (Secure ICT research and innovation) Strategic Research Agenda. In addition, Walton has served as an animator and rapporteur in sessions on voluntary information data sharing for cybersecurity during the EU-US dialogues.
Walton Institute is a member of the European Cybersecurity Organisation (ECSO), which is the private counterpart to the European Commission in implementing the contractual Public-Private Partnership (cPPP) on cybersecurity. ECSO’s main goal is to develop a competitive European cybersecurity ecosystem, to support the protection of the European Digital Single Market with trusted cybersecurity solutions, and to contribute to the advancement of the European digital autonomy. We are active members in the following ECSO Working groups WG2: Market Deployment, Investments and International collaboration; WG3, Sectoral Demand, where James Clarke is a co-chair of the sub working group 3.8 on Telecom, media and Content; and WG6, Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.
Walton Institute is a founding member of the Digital Enlightenment Forum, which is a value-driven non-profit association and community of members committed to the evolution of digitisation in society while respecting human values. Digital Enlightenment Forum brings together a network of experts and professionals to create and stimulate multi-stakeholder discussions to find solution-focused strategies.
