Walton Institute at South East Technological University (SETU) Experienced Software Researcher Sinéad Barnett was co-winner of a poster competition recently held at SETU’s inaugural Digital Education Conference 2023 (DEC 23). The Digital Education Conference is a new annual event bringing educators, researchers, and industry professionals together to share and discover innovative uses of technology in teaching and learning environments.
Sinéad’s poster is titled, “Comparison and Evaluation of Palliative Care Website Interactive Learning and Virtual Reality Learning,” and focuses on offering solutions to student nurses who feel unprepared for palliative and end-of-life delivery care. The poster details an interactive educational tool designed and developed in collaboration with Geraldine Purcell from the SETU Nursing Department, which brings the student through three unique real life clinical scenarios. The first scenario focuses on therapeutic communication; the second focuses on a holistic pain assessment; and the third focuses on end-of-life delivery care. The poster explores the benefits of interactive learning, and how it can improve learning outcomes and potential future work to create these scenarios into a virtual reality training experience for nursing students.
Sinéad says: “It was great to attend DEC 23 in SETU. It was interesting to attend the talks and speak to so many people. I am delighted I had to opportunity to show our hard work and win second place for Best Poster.”
Sinéad was joined at the event by the Walton Institute XR team, which submitted papers and shared insights, research results, and experiences with the DEC audience.
AR/VR Technical Lead Walton Institute’s Ian Mills says: “The XR team at Walton Institute is proud to be part of this exciting new conference. The education and training space is a key sector in the team’s strategy going into 2024 and beyond, as we seek to expand our understanding and knowledge of the topic, in particular in relation to its use with immersive technologies such as XR. The group looks forward to an exciting and prosperous year of research in 2024.”
