Komal Komal, PhD student in Walton Institute in SETU was delighted to present her research at ICTCME 2024: XVIII International Conference on Textile Composites, Materials, and Engineering, held in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29-30, 2024.

Komal’s presentation, titled “A 2-D and 3-D embroidered textrode testing framework adhering to ISO standards,” represents an important aspect of my work aimed at advancing the development of durable and reliable embroidered textrodes for use in wearable technology, particularly for epilepsy monitoring.

The main objective of this study is to provide an ISO-compliant framework for mechanically testing embroidered textrodes and simulating their behaviour under various conditions. This methodology is essential for assessing the long-term durability and efficiency of textrodes in medical applications.

    Best Presenter

The event showcased a wide range of presentations on textile composites, including significant breakthroughs in composite materials and engineering. Her talk was especially well-received and was presented with the Best Presenter Award, highlighting the potential impact of my research on future developments in the field.

Reflecting on her participation in the conference, Komal said, “I am honoured to have presented my research at ICTCME 2024 and to have received the Best Presenter Award. This study will play a vital role in supporting future research on the durability and reliability of embroidered textrodes for a wide range of applications. I am extremely grateful to my supervisory team, Dr Louise Bennett, Dr Frances Cleary, and Prof John Wells, for their invaluable support and guidance. I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to the Walton Institute for providing access to the e-Textile Smart Lab, which was crucial for the experimental work. Additionally, I am thankful to Dr. Iftikhar Ali Sahito and Mehran University of Engineering and Technology for granting me access to their Textile department’s testing equipment, which was significant for my research.”

    Next Steps

This study is expected to have a substantial impact on the future of wearable technology, laying the foundation for further advances in smart garments for biopotential monitoring. Moving forward, the testing framework will be expanded to analyze textrodes under different conditions and explore new applications for this innovative technology.
