Food waste project ZeroW meets in Brussels

    The ZeroW project Council of Partners meeting was held on 26th June and 27th June in Brussels, Belgium at the Herman Teirlinckgebouw Building. Inlecom Commercial Pathways is the project coordinator. The event was well attended both in person and online by all the ZeroW partners from various countries of Europe. At the meeting, representatives from Walton Institute, namely John McLaughlin, Kristina Matuleviciute, and Anjuman Ara Kali, were in attendance. 

    The ZeroW project collaborates with 46 partners, including Walton Institute, spanning 17 countries across Europe, aiming to reduce food waste and loss through the implementation of systemic innovation in the food supply chain. The ultimate objective of the project is to achieve zero in food waste and loss in Europe by the year 2050.

    During the Council of Partners meeting, the participating partners presented their periodic reports, providing insights into the outcomes of their work within the ZeroW project and highlighting their contributions to the project’s objectives. The meeting provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions among the partners, focusing on the progress made on FLW (food loss and waste) innovation solutions. These discussions played a role in facilitating the next steps of the project, enabling partners to work towards achieving sustainable and impactful innovation solutions to reduce food waste and loss in supply chain.

    Walton Institute is contributing to the project by its machine learning and software engineering expertise. Walton Institute leads WP3 (Work Package 3) of the ZeroW project. John McLaughlin presented the overall project deliverables related to WP3, relevant KPIs and the overview of the objective of the Work Package, and the architectural diagram for FLW Intelligent service and Big Data Infrastructural service. A prototype application was also presented to demonstrate how juice and smoothie recipes can be chosen to make the maximum utilization of the surplus fruits and vegetables.
