Martin joined Walton Institute in 2014 and has been involved in EU projects since. His current role within Walton Institute is as the Technical Lead with the Mobile Ecosystem and Pervasive Sensing (MEPS) Research Unit. Within this role he was the technical coordinator and the coordinator for the CogNet project (RIA), from Phase-1 of the 5G-PPP H2020 which completed its successful final review in 2018.
Currently Martin is the Technical lead for the South East Technological University team and a work package leader on the H2020 funded TransSec project (H2020-GALILEO-GSA-2017: Applications in Satellite Navigation – Galileo) which deals with transport security and more importantly the detection and probability of terrorist attacks using heavy vehicles. This has exposed him to numerous transport related protocols and domains that have helped him integrate emerging EU regulations into the communications for vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I) and pedestrians (V2P), collectively known as V2X communications. Martin is also the technical lead for the SETU team on the H2020 funded 5G-Solutions project (H2020-ICT-2018-3; ICT-19 – Advanced 5G validation trials across multiple vertical industries), which aims to prove and validate that 5G provides prominent industry verticals with ubiquitous access to a wide range of forward-looking services with orders of magnitude of improvement over 4G, thus bringing the 5G vision closer to realisation. This will be achieved through conducting advanced field-trials of innovative use cases, directly involving end-users across five significant industry vertical domains: Factories of the Future, Smart Energy, Smart Cities, Smart Ports, Media & Entertainment.
Prior to joining Walton Institute, Martin was a project manager and a principle engineer with ABB which exposed Martin to a wealth of technology and business opportunities in the successful delivery of many multi-million Euro projects over a period of fifteen years. In his first role in ABB Martin was a senior embedded software engineer with ABB whose primary responsibility was the design and development of on-line paper measurement sensors and control for the pulp and paper industry. Martin also worked in the Consumer Devices industry for several years where the primary responsibility was for the development of Digital TVs and Set Top Boxes that were compatible with emerging digital terrestrial television standards (DVB-T).
Martins main interests now lie in the transport and cloud architecture domains utilising 5G, Network Management, transport infrastructure and the application of AI (in particular Machine Learning) to each of these fields to help solve problems inherent in these fields such as Autonomic Management of networks (5G using SDN, NFV & 5G slices) and optimised & efficient evacuation routing for citizens (transport related terror attacks).
Education
Martin graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) with an MSc in computing (Communications Software). Prior to this Martin graduated from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) with a BEng in Electronic Engineering.
